Diabetes is a chronic disease that 463 million people are afflicted with globally, or 26% of the world’s population, and someone dies from the disease every 8 seconds. The estimated global direct annual health expenditure on diabetes in 2020 is 780 billion USD and is expected to grow to a projected 825 billion USD by 2030 and 855 billion USD by 2045. A global priority needs to invest in solutions that reduce the burdens of diabetes on our healthcare systems, improving the lives of individuals with the disease or eliminating the disease entirely.
